What follows is the transcript of an email sent by the Wesleyan University administration to many students.
Sent on behalf of David S. Winakor, Wesleyan University's General Counsel
Hello,
This correspondence is being sent to you in accordance with FERPA (34 CFR section 99.31) and is intended to notify you of the following:
a. As a result of a Police investigation into potentially criminal vandalism that occurred earlier this year at the University, Wesleyan has received a warrant seeking MAC addresses and associated identifications for connection activity 1) at North and South College on May 9, 2024 between 3:45 am and 5:30 am and 2) at Admissions on May 14, 2024 between 3:30 am and 4:00 am.
b. The University intends to comply with the warrant by providing the records requested, to the extent they exist, as required under the warrant and it intends to do so at the close of normal business on Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
c. If you wish to object to the release of these records, you or your attorney would likely need to file a motion to that effect in Connecticut Superior Court in Middletown, Connecticut. If you or your attorney does file such a motion, please ensure that a copy is sent to Wesleyan at this address the day that it is filed.
Thank you
(Of course, it is widely known that the Middletown Police Department does not do anything on campus unless explicitly authorized by Wesleyan University. It's almost certain that Wesleyan themselves requested this search warrant to be served.)
